Information for prospective new members
We are always happy to meet prospective new dancers.
If you are thinking of joining us, here is some information to help you decide.
When and where?
We normally welcome new members in the autumn, then spend the winter months teaching and practising the dances, and dance out (i.e. perform) from May onwards.
We practice on Wednesday evenings between 8pm and 10pm at the Burton Street Foundation in Hillsborough, Sheffield. Occasionally we will run a workshop at a weekend.
What dancing experience do I need?
It helps if you have done some dancing before, but it is not essential. You just need to be able to feel the music and get your feet hitting the floor in time with it. Our great band of musicians make this easy!
We exist to perform. It may sound obvious, but what we mean by this is we are not a keep fit class or similar. Attending practices represents a commitment to dancing out when you are ready and we do encourage everyone to make weekly practice a priority in their diaries. Missing practices means it takes longer to learn the dances and makes it harder to maintain continuity in dance positions.
Dancing out will sometimes be on weekday evenings but more often during the daytime at weekends, both in the Sheffield area and occasionally further afield (which may involve being away from home for a couple of nights or so).
How much will it cost?
Once you are a full member, you start paying subscriptions, currently £15.00 per month, by Standing Order. This mainly covers the cost of the room hire for practices. While you are on probation, it is all free!
Material for any specialist kit is normally paid for by the team, although the current kit of black skirts and tops are standard items readily available in many shops and so are purchased individually by each member. Shoes and accessories are also the responsibility of each member.
Great! What do I do next?
